Breathing Room

When thinking alone
has stopped working.

Some situations are too tangled to think through on your own. Not because you're not capable, but because clarity needs another presence. Someone who can hold the whole picture with you until what actually matters becomes visible.

What it is

A contained space
to untangle things.

Clarity Under Pressure is a single 90-minute session focused on a situation that's been keeping you stuck. Something with enough weight and complexity that you haven't been able to think your way out of it alone.

It's not therapy. It's not coaching. It sits in a different place, between the isolation of going round in circles by yourself and the commitment of entering a formal support programme.

By the end of the session, you'll have identified your real next step and when you'll take it. Not a solution handed to you. Something you've arrived at yourself, with the fog cleared enough to see it.

"Most people don't need more information.
They need the noise to settle long enough to see what they already know."

The session works because clarity isn't usually a shortage of answers, it's an excess of pressure. Given enough space and the right kind of attention, most people already know what they need to do.

The session

Ninety minutes.
One conversation. One clear next step.

The session follows a simple structure, not rigid, but purposeful.

Session type Clarity Under Pressure

  1. Bring what's present You don't need to prepare or organise your thoughts in advance. We start with whatever feels most loaded right now.

  2. We look at the whole picture What's actually going on. What is and isn't in your control. What's really at stake. Often the issue that feels most urgent isn't the one that needs addressing first.

  3. The noise begins to settle As the situation is examined from enough angles, patterns emerge. The thing that's been underneath the weight of it becomes visible, usually something simpler than it felt.

  4. You name your next step At the end of the session, you write down, in your own words, your clear next step and when you'll take it. Not because you're being held to it, but because naming it makes it real.

Some people come once. Others return when something significant is in motion again. There's no programme, no obligation, no expectation of continuity.
Who it's for

If something is keeping
you awake at night.

The situations that tend to bring people to a session like this usually involve more than one pressure at once: work, health, family, a decision that keeps circling without resolution.

This is for you if —

  • You're carrying multiple pressures and can't separate them
  • You've been going round in circles on the same decision
  • You feel mentally crowded and can't get perspective
  • Thinking alone has stopped producing any forward movement
  • You need another presence, but not a programme
  • Something is sitting heavily and you can't put your finger on why

This isn't the right fit if —

  • You're in crisis or need urgent support
  • You're looking for clinical or therapeutic care
  • You need deep trauma processing
  • You want someone to tell you what to do

If you're unsure whether this is right for your situation, you're welcome to reach out before booking.

About

I've been doing this
for thirty years.

Not formally, just as the person people seemed to find when things felt tangled. I didn't choose the role. It was more that people kept arriving at it, often in the middle of something difficult, and leaving with more clarity than they'd had when they came.

I watched my mother do exactly the same thing. She had a particular ability to take the messiest situation, something that felt hopelessly knotted, and calmly find the thread that mattered. It was only later that I realised I'd quietly been doing the same.

Over the years that's meant being the person a friend turned to from the edge of something very dark. They're still here, and thriving. Sitting with my sister through cancer treatment and helping her find a mindset that carried her through it. Being trusted by people I'd only just met with the things they hadn't said out loud to anyone else.

I'm not a therapist. I don't offer advice or tell people what to do. What I do is stay present, pay close attention, and help the situation be looked at from enough angles that the path through it becomes visible to the person who's in it.

My mum would probably just say I was paying attention.

Practical details

Format

In person, outdoors, walking side by side where possible, if you're within an hour of Pickering, North Yorkshire. Otherwise by telephone — a format that often opens things up more than a screen does.

Availability

Sessions are usually available within a few days of booking. I don't offer sessions during school holidays or on the weekends I have my children. If timing doesn't work, I'll say so plainly.

What to expect

After booking I'll be in touch to arrange a time and confirm the format. You don't need to prepare anything. Just bring the situation as it is.

A single session.
When you need it.

There's no intake process, no commitment beyond the session itself. Book when something needs looking at. Come back if something else does.

For someone who hasn't slept properly in weeks because they can't get out of their own head — getting unstuck is worth considerably more than the session costs.
